Using Miro boards in your online lessons - one tutor's story

Have you ever thought about adding a little bit of spice to your online lessons? This is what English tutor Sofiia Pohut had in mind when she started using Miro to create lesson materials.

With Miro, Sofiia has created a wide range of tutoring materials, from worksheets and games to entire workbooks and ppts. You can find Sofiia's materials in her profile here. As a seasoned Miro user, Sofiia gave us a walkthrough of its functions and introduced us to the best practices for creating Miro board teaching materials. Now it's our turn to show you the ropes.

“Miro boards are a dynamic tool that can be used in a variety of different ways to captivate your student's attention. Because of their interactive functions, they can be a great way to supplement your lessons and help students follow along with what you are saying. They can also be used to help students practice specific skills and topics that you teach them in class.” says Sofiia.

"Getting started with Miro is fairly straightforward. Once you've made an account on Miro you can go ahead and start creating your own boards. Miro offers a wide range of tools to help you create interactive and dynamic teaching materials. For example, the 'cards' feature in Miro allows you to create customizable teaching cards that can be organized into groups." says Sofiia. “I also like to incorporate other learning tools such as Quizlet flashcards into my Miro boards.”

Sofiia, who also spends a significant amount of time volunteer-tutoring explained her motivation behind using Miro boards. “Back in the day I tried purchasing workbooks online but I quickly came to the realization that they were not very well-adapted to meet the needs of young learners. [The kids] might see a nice cartoon in the workbook but the text is too difficult to interpret.”

"The best part about Miro is that you can use them in real-time with your students. A lot of my younger students don't have the technical ability to log into Miro and access my resources and would require assistance from their parents. This is too time consuming – what's great about Miro is that I can access my boards through Zoom and share them with my students."

Sofiia explained that once your Miro boards page is up on Zoom and being shared with your students, they can interact with the materials directly from their own Zoom interface without leaving the online lesson.

In addition to implementing your Miro board materials in your online lessons, you can upload them to your PrepYourLesson profile and share them with other tutors. Once you've created a Miro board, you can save it as a file to your desktop and upload it to your page as a pdf, enabling other users to purchase and download your materials. If they have their own Miro boards accounts they can drop the materials in their own Miro space and customize it. As Sofiia might tell you, using Miro boards can truly change your lessons for the better and improve both the teaching and learning experience for you and your students. Try out Miro for yourself and share your materials with us!
